 | HILL CLOSE GARDENS Hill Close Gardens are a rare example of something which was very common in the last century: a group of hedged gardens, just outside the built-up area. They were used and enjoyed by the shopkeepers and professional people who lived over their businesses in the town centre and so had little garden around their homes.
Hill Close Gardens were acquired by Warwick District Council with the intention of building on them. However, their historical importance was recognised just in time, and the gardens have been registered as being of exceptional national importance.
Pittaways were appointed as contractors to contruct a purpose made vistors centre to provide a permanent showcase for the Victorian gardens and a stunning focal point for this historically important site. >> More details... | | | ST. The works entailed extensive renovation of the structure and fabric of the building, which despite the delicate condition retained many of the original wattle and daub infill panels and much of the structural timber frame.
Using traditional building materials and techniques, Pittaways craftsmen painstakingly reconstructed the terrace and court buildings restoring them to their former glory, whilst ultilising the latest technology in solar energy and rainwater harvesting to provide mains services with minimal impact on the environment.
By providing training opportunities for the local community, the restoration of Black Swan Terrace presented an outstanding opportunity to restore a part of Coventry's heritage and ensure that the skills needed to carry out these works are conctinued for future generations. >> More details... | |
